Root cause and evidence support: the finding that holds.

When a site underperforms, every party has an account of what went wrong. We establish the technical root cause from the data and document it, so the finding stands up rather than repeating one party's view of its own work.

The gap

Manufacturer warranty covers the box. Someone has to answer for the site.

Where a failure has several possible causes, each party covers a piece, and rarely does anyone sign for the whole site. That is the gap a root-cause and evidence engagement closes.

What we do

Four steps, in this order.

The order matters: evidence touched before it is preserved is evidence lost.

  1. 1

    Preserve

Event logs, BMS and PCS records secured before anything on site is changed.

  2. 2

    Read the data

Cell voltage and temperature history, state-of-health readings, fault codes, operating commands.

  3. 3

    Establish the cause

The technical root cause and contributing factors, tested against the data rather than any party's account.

  4. 4

    Document

A written record of what failed, where, and what the data shows, with an evidence index.

The data behind the judgement

EU rules now put the battery's own data within reach.

The EU Battery Regulation gives owners access to state-of-health data and, from 2027, a battery passport. We read that data from the record, which is what makes a finding defensible rather than an opinion.

August 2024

State-of-health data

Article 14: battery management data on state of health and expected lifetime, readable by the owner or a party acting for them.

February 2027

Battery passport

Industrial batteries above 2 kWh carry a digital passport.

What you receive

A finding you can hand to a manufacturer, a lender or an insurer.

Written to be read by engineers and by people who are not. Shared with the manufacturer in Chinese where that speeds up the response.

Illustrative · fictitious site

Finding: string isolation, Site A

Event
One battery string isolated by the BMS; site output reduced.
Data reviewed
BMS event log, cell temperature history, HVAC records, PCS fault records.
Root cause
Coolant pump failure in the thermal system led to a temperature rise; BMS protection acted as designed.
Not causal
Cell degradation within the expected range.
Evidence index
Logs, photographs and readings, listed and dated.
Why the finding holds

Our revenue does not depend on whose part failed.

BessRe is the party accountable for availability and response time of storage assets in Europe. We sell no hardware, integrate nothing, distribute nothing — our revenue comes only from service contracts, so we have no reason to favour any manufacturer's account of a failure.

We also provide after-sales services to manufacturers under framework agreements. Where a finding concerns one of our clients, we tell you before work begins. The method and the data are the same either way.

How we charge

Scoped per engagement, agreed before work begins.

Under an availability engagement, root cause is part of the service. For other sites, we scope the work first and agree it with you before anything starts.

Need the contracts mapped as well? Contract and liability reviews are offered by bess.care, a separate team within the BessRe group.
